  1. Yes it definitely can hurt the garden. (This photo was taken in 2009 when we had a lot of “fallout” from a nearby fire. We haven’t had any of that this year and I’m happy to say that the wind has kept the smoke away from Fairbanks the last few days.) As long as there’s rain soon after the ash falls it’s no problem (or you hose down the leaves), but in 2009 my garden definitely took a hit from the smoke and ash. The smoke blocks the sun, which is worse than ash. Ash is fine for plants if its mixed into the soil but not good if it falls on the leaves and blocks the sun’s rays.
